Ceramics

Xanthan gum has important applications in the ceramic industry.

Applications

  • As a thickener and stabilizer for glazes: Xanthan gum can be used as a thickener and stabilizer in ceramic glazes. It can increase the viscosity of the glaze, prevent the settlement of glaze components, and keep the glaze in a stable suspended state. This is conducive to the uniform application of the glaze on the surface of the ceramic blank, improving the quality and appearance of the glaze.
  • Improving the rheological properties of ceramic slurries: In the preparation of ceramic slurries, xanthan gum can improve the rheological properties of the slurries, making the slurries have better fluidity and thixotropy. It can be easily molded during the ceramic forming process and can maintain the shape of the blank, reducing the occurrence of deformation and cracking.
  • Enhancing the strength of ceramic green bodies: Xanthan gum can also be used as a binder in ceramic green bodies. It can improve the bonding force between ceramic particles, enhance the strength and toughness of the green body, and reduce the cracking of the green body during the drying and firing processes, thereby improving the yield and quality of ceramic products.

Addition Levels

The addition amount of xanthan gum in the ceramic industry usually depends on the specific type of ceramic product and the formulation requirements of the glaze or slurry. Generally, when used as a suspending stabilizer for ceramic glazes, the addition amount is between 0.3% and 1.0% of the total formula weight.
